Coral Reefs & Mangroves

Sunny and Lucy

Mangroves

Mangrove grows in the sea water.

Birds can use it for roosting, feeding, and breeding.
It has functions of sediment trapping, and erosion prevention.

Woods are for fuels and construction.
It also helps many people to come.

Coral Reefs

Coral reef provides fisheries, and it is the ecosystem itself.
It supports high biodiversity.

It provides habitat for many fish, such as crown-fish.

There was a movie name Finding Nemo, which also shows the coral reef and crown fish helping each other.

Examine the sustainability of ocean fishing. [10 marks]

The movie “The End of the Line” explains to us how the ecosystem is in danger, how much fishermen’s catches in the ocean endangering the endangered species. It describes how much fish were caught overtime and the result it leads to the global depletion of fish stocks.

There are some negative results of overfishing. Because of the loss of fish in some oceans, many people lost their jobs. In 1992, fish were out of existence in Europe, especially England, which affected 40,000 people to lose their jobs. Moreover, in 1980, the rate of the fish declined to the 10% of those in 1952. All the graphs about changes of fish population show a rapid decline of the amount of sea animals.

As shown in the graph, the amount of the cod is declining. Also, the percent of species collapsed are increasing, which means that the seafood species are declining its rate.

Fish would migrate to other areas in the world that would explain why fishermen would not catch as much fish as before. Take China for an example, they have been catching more fishes than in other countries. People are worried that fishes would run out, the prices for fishes would increase; biggest problem in the world. Furthermore, to catch a lot of fish, people are blocking the way fish are moving. Tunas that migrate from Mediterranean Sea to Atlantic Ocean are getting caught by people who are waiting for fish to start migrating.

As the increasing population of people, demands for fish are expected to be higher than those of now. However, fish should be sustained in order to prevent extinction of sea animal. Now, 50% of the fishes caught from the North Sea was illegal. The world decided to protect marine areas and put up ‘No Fishing Zones’ . To add more to that, one of the biggest company, Mitsubishi controlled increasing 40% of blue fin fish tuna. There are some ways to prevent extinction of fish; cutting fish fleet, creating campaigns about saving sea animals, and making some illegal zones for people catch fish.
